Photo Description: POWER
Today as my last full post on this tumblr feed I bring you the chinese symbol of power. You and only you have the power to make every choice in your life. You must take responsibility for every decision and every experience.
Take the turn of the new year and take your power that is yours and be all you can be.
I am no expert on any of this stuff but that is my mission for the turn of the year.

Photo Description: Om
Today with only one more post on my tumblr site tomorrow I am showing you a symbol that is near and dear to my heart… and has been on my ankle for some 10 years or so..
This is the Om symbol.
“Om is the one eternal syllable of which all that exists is but the development. The past, the present, and the future are all included in this one sound, and all that exists beyond the three forms of time is also implied in it”.
Om (also spelled Aum) is a Hindu sacred sound that is considered the greatest of all mantras.
The syllable Om is composed of the three sounds a-u-m (in Sanskrit, the vowels a and u combine to become o) and the symbol’s threefold nature is central to its meaning. It represent several important triads:
- the three worlds - earth, atmosphere, and heaven
- the three major Hindu gods - Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva
- the three sacred Vedic scriptures - Rg, Yajur, and Sama
Thus Om mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. This meaning is further deepened by the Indian philosophical belief that God first created sound and the universe arose from it. As the most sacred sound, Om is the root of the universe and everything that exists and it continues to hold everything together.
The syllable is discussed in a number of the Upanishads, which are the texts of philosophical speculation, and it forms the entire subject matter of one, the Mandukya.
AUM is a bow, the arrow is the self,
And Brahman (Absolute Reality) is said to be the mark.
(Mandukya Upanishad)
The essence of all beings is the earth.
The essence of the earth is water.
The essence of water is the plant.
The essence of the plant is man.
The essence of man is speech.
The essence of speech is the Rigveda.
The essence of Rigveda is the Samveda.
The essence of Samveda is OM.
(Chandogya Upanishad)
All those activities which people start with uttering the syllable OM do not fail to bear fruit.
(Shankaracharya’s Commentary on the Taittriya Upanishad 1.8.1)
In the Puranas the syllable Om became associated in various ways with the major Hindu devotional sects. Saivites mark the lingam (a symbol of Shiva) with the symbol for Om, while Vaishnavites identify the three sounds as referring to the trinity of Vishnu, his wife Sri, and the worshiper.
Om is spoken at the beginning and the end of Hindu mantras, prayers, and meditations and is frequently used in Buddhist and Jain rituals as well. Om is used in the practice of Yoga and is related to techniques of auditory meditation. From the 6th century, the written symbol of Om was used to mark the beginning of a text in a manuscript or an inscription. Om Parvat, a sacred peak at 6191m in the Indian Himalayas, is revered for its snow deposition pattern that resembles Om.

Photo Description: COURAGE
One of the biggest elements of change is having the courage to do so. You have to step out of your comfort zone and embrace a new path. Although scary and difficult, it can change your life and bring to you a whole new word you never even knew was possible. So many seek this at the turn of the year so take it on!
Tonight I was inspired by the film: “The Art Of Flight” and these quotes by Travis Rice:
“When a human being can be creative, that is when anything is possible.”
“You never know your true potential until you push yourself to see.”
“Adventure is what you make of it. Whether it is the travel, the discovery, or just the feeling of letting go, the only way we will ever find out is by getting out there and doing it. Enjoy the ride.”
Cheers!

Photo Description: The Dragonfly
This creature has always amazed me and has additionally entered my life at key points. Today I share with you it’s symbolism and a few quotes…
The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.
The traditional association of Dragonflies with water also gives rise to this meaning to this amazing insect. The Dragonfly’s scurrying flight across water represents an act of going beyond what’s on the surface and looking into the deeper implications and aspects of life.
The dragonfly’s agile flight and its ability to move in all six directions exude a sense of power and poise - something that comes only with age and maturity.
The dragonfly can move at an amazing 45 miles an hour, hover like a helicopter fly backwards like a hummingbird, fly straight up, down and on either side. What is mind blowing is the fact that it can do this while flapping its wings a mere 30 times a minute while mosquitoes and houseflies need to flap their wings 600 and 1000 times a minute respectively.
The awe inspiring aspect is how the dragonfly accomplishes its objectives with utmost simplicity, effectiveness and well, if you look at proportions, with 20 times as much power in each of its wing strokes when compared to the other insects. The best part is that the dragonfly does it with elegance and grace that can be compared to a veteran ballet dancer. If this is not a brazen, lazy, overkill in terms of display of raw power, what is?
The dragonfly exhibits iridescence both on its wings as well as on its body. Iridescence is the property of an object to show itself in different colors depending on the angle and polarization of light falling on it.
This property is seen and believed as the end of one’s self created illusions and a clear vision into the realities of life. The magical property of iridescence is also associated with the discovery of one’s own abilities by unmasking the real self and removing the doubts one casts on his/her own sense of identity. This again indirectly means self discovery and removal of inhibitions.
The dragonfly normally lives most of its life as a nymph or an immature. It flies only for a fraction of its life and usually not more than a few months. This adult dragonfly does it all in these few months and leaves nothing to be desired. This style of life symbolizes and exemplifies the virtue of living IN the moment and living life to the fullest. By living in the moment you are aware of who you are, where you are, what you are doing, what you want, what you don’t and make informed choices on a moment-to-moment basis.
This ability lets you live your life without regrets like the great dragonfly.
The eyes of the dragonfly are one of the most amazing and awe inspiring sights. Given almost 80% of the insect’s brain power is dedicated to its sight and the fact that it can see in all 360 degrees around it, it symbolizes the uninhibited vision of the mind and the ability to see beyond the limitations of the human self. It also in a manner of speaking symbolizes a man/woman’s rising from materialism to be able to see beyond the mundane into the vastness that is really our Universe, and our own minds.
I leave you with these quotes on change as many this year going into next seek to grow and change:
“If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it — change the way you think about it.”
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
“The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of your state of mind.”

Photo Description: new beginnings
With only 5 posts left on this tumblr feed to total 365 for the year and for this project to come to an end, it is due time to begin focus on next year and leaving it behind to launch to new beginnings. Many do this and set new goals and initiatives. For me this year, it is a time to reflect, be real with the years occurrences and look to continue to grow and propel forward in 2012. So these 5 posts will have that focus to try to inspire others to do the same. This symbol means new beginnings. Only you can change you. Only you can decide what choices you make with your day and how you live it. Only you can get up and decide to have a shit day or a good day. The choice is yours every day and it is yours now. So make it a good one for your own well being. Rise up and take it on with courage and passion and strive for love, compassion and happiness in all you do to you and others and you will receive just that in return.
“The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.”
“Things do not change; we change.” —Henry David Thoreau
